Résumé : The Lower Shire Valley is not presently an oilseed producing area; of all the potential oil-crops, only groundnut (0,5 % cultivated acreage) and sesame are present, to a very small extent. Possibilities exist for perennial, high-yielding crops (palm-tree and coconut), but these would require a long-term and elaborate research programme, very skilled and costly management of irrigation and the implementation of specific oil-extracting equipment. A sub-spontaneous euphorbia, Jatropha curcas, is present in the valley as a hedge-plant; it is grown in some western-african countries (Cabo-Verde Republic) for its oil-producing fruits, used as a substitute for fuel. This opening could be investigated, and a srna.11-scale research-development project is proposed.
