Résumé : The setting, within the university of Sokoine in Morogoro, of an inoculant production unit was realized in the framework of project TCP/URT/4524. Inoculants are to be produced in large amounts for experimentation and demonstration purposes with various rhizobium strains. One of the problems often encountered when producing inoculants in tropical countries is the availabi1ity of a suitable carrier, allowing the survival of Rhizobium high numbers, until the use in farmers' fields. Peat is usually considered as a good carrier provided it is neutralized, either naturally or by addition of lime. However, it is not always available in large amounts and several substitutes for it have been identified such as bagasillo or filter mud from sugar mills. In Tanzania, this type of agricultural residues is available; it can be, however, of varying quality and it was decided, within the framework of the project, to evaluate the quality of the filtermud available as a carrier. The following report describes the evaluation made on the filtermud obtained from the sugar cane processing plant of Kilimbero, not far from Morogoro.
