Résumé : 1986 was marked by good production despite the halt in mill operations in March (full tanks) and the troubles created by the work force in April. Total bunch production approaches 27,000 tonnes and 1977 crops have attained a yield/ha of around 14 tonnes. 1987 will be much less remarkable as results should scarcely exceed 20,000 tonnes. Several unfavourable factors came into play: a 400 mm water deficit between November 86 and February 87, leading to bunch abortion and tree mortality; an extremely violent Coelaenomenodera attack on almost 2,000 hectares of NES and a fair part of the SH; the effects of these attacks on production in these areas will be felt from the end of 87 up to 1989; the absence of serious fertilization since 1982, with, in particular, an almost general K deficiency, which is an important mineral element for production. In 1988, due ta Coelaenomenodera effects, production is not likely to exceed 26,000 tonnes. The main points touched upon during this visit were the improvement of plot upkeep and access to bunches (use of a rotary slasher, ULV chemical treatments, pruning); mechanization of fertilizer applications; utilization of bunch stalks; productivity improvements and reductions in manpower; strict supervision of the car pool; establishment of a legume caver crop collection. Fertilizer recommendations were drawn up for 1987. The first clonal plantlets have been received and will be planted in 1988. Phase II is going ahead under excellent conditions. 723 ha concerning 375 farmers were planted in 1986 and 700 ha in 1987 (365 farmers). Plants for more than 120 ha have been supplied to complete SH plots (Phase I). Efforts should be made to plant pueraria and prohibit the planting of food crops in the immediate vicinity of young palms. Fertilizers were applied in compliance with the recommendations given. Prospecting for phase III could start at the beginning of 1988. A training programme is currently being drawn up.
