Résumé : Weeds are one of the most important factors which make it impossible to obtain high yields and high-quality fibers in West Africa, because traditional shifting cultivation is progressively being replaced by larger and mechanized stabilized farms. For the farmers, these changes induce problems related to weeds and the use of chemical weeding is increasing in the French-speaking countries, cotton, which is the cash crop, is the first crop to have been chemically weeded. This technique is used over areas which caver up to a quarter of the total area in certain areas.
