Résumé : Oil palm fertilization should be based on the results of fertilizer experiments, which confirm in other respects the indications given by soil analyses and by the evolution of the mineral nutrition in the industrial estates (control leaf analysis). The main deficiency is potassic, but a clear distinction must be made between the estates in the West, which call for abundant potassic manuring to maintain their potential, and those in the centre and East whose needs are probably mu.ch lower. Consequently, we have proposed two schedules which take account of leaf analyses and the yield potential. The first corresponds to the large requirements of Bota, Debundscha and Idenau; it is based on experimental results which show its profitability. The second applies to the Moliwe, Mungo, Mondoni and Benoe Estates; the potassium rates allowed are lower, in accordance with the corresponding experimentation which has not yet made it possible to come to a conclusion on the profitability of potassic manuring. However, it is reasonable not to suppress this fertilizer completely, as it is likely to come into play sooner or later since leaf analysis shows a trend towards the slow degradation of the K levels. The 1974-1977 results of current experimentation, not yet available, may lead us to revise this initial position. Furthermore, the Mungo, Mondoni and Benoe Estates are sensitive to a magnesian deficiency, which can be corrected easily without having recourse to very heavy rates of Kieserite. These recommendations are not essentially different to the norms practised up to now by the CDC, but they are more finely shaded and above all they take better account of the experimental results. It is also proposed that the manuring schedule for immature areas now in use should be modified whilst keeping to the principle of giving sufficient and split rates of NK (and Mg for the East), as this guarantees the homogeneity of the estate for an extra outlay which is relatively modest compared to the total investment cost.
