Résumé : The participants were aware of how this work is sometimes hindered by the quarantine regulations in force at the present time. A text on the subject, drawn up by a group of scientists from different countries, is being published. FAO, while fully recognizing the usefulness of this type of protection, is bringing pressure to bear upon the Governments so that it does not become an immovable barrier preventing the movement of genetic material. The contacts which took place, under WARDA, between IRRI, IITA and IRAT-ORSTOM, in May 1976 and led to organizing this meeting, have shown the interest of IRAT-ORSTOM being represented on the IBPGR Rive Committee, even if formal participation is not possible. One of the objects of this meeting was to prepare definite, concrete arrangements to be adopted during the meeting at Ibadan in March 1977. The essential subject of the March meeting however was "Rice in Africa" and was not confined to the particular field of collecting, conserving and utilizing the genetic heritage of African rices (it was later agreed that at the meeting the people concerned taking part would be able to organize a sub-group to examine the sampling methods and financial problems involved).
