Résumé : During 1984 and 1985 was conducted an Upland Rice Survey. Forty-one countries returned the questionnaires; 4countries were not reporting any upland rice cultivation (Afghanistan, Argentina, Pakistan, USA); Ethiopia has only very restricted areas for testing some material. So, 36 collaborative countries are included into the final report. 67coll.aborators provided very kindly the information. The total area covered by the survey is18108020 hectares; representing approximately 90% of the world upland rice area. Out of these, 5120000 hectares (28%) are located in Latin America, 1129000 hectares (6%) in Africa and 11859000 (66%) in Asia. The purpose of the survey was: to determine what are the major constraint s existing in different countries and refraining from higher yields than actually obtained; to have a priority list of problems which need attention according to their relative importance in the world; to have a list of materials (traditional cultivars, improved lines) available for anybody requesting for research purposes; to determine what could be the best phenotype(s) as defined by the different countries. India is given by states reporting, because the problem is frequently very different according to the states.
