Résumé : The estimated area of upland rice, on a worldwide basis is about 20 million hectares and 13% of the world total. From these 56% are located in Asia, 32% in America and 12% in Africa. The largest upland rice producing countries are Brazil and India (5.9 million hectares each), followed by Indonesia (1.2 million ha), Bangladesh and Thailand (0.9 million ha). The mean yield is low, approximately 1.2 t/ha. So, the total production represents 23 million t or 6% of the world total. In fact, it is not so important, except for the farmers which grow upland rice and are, in many countries, the poorest rice growers. The future for upland rice is very important: only for Brazil and Indonesia, a potential of about 12 million hectares has been reported, but many million hectares of savannahs are also potential in Africa, Central and South America and Asia. This indicates the need of further investigations, not only to increase the low yields recorded at present time in many countries, but also to provide new cultivars presenting good local adaptation for the areas which will be opened for upland rice cultivation in the very near future.
