Résumé : Experience shows that the transfer from a traditional rainfed farming to intensive irrigated farming is slow and progressive. The pace of adaptation is governed essentially by the speed at which the technical and sociological aspects of the project are mastered. It must he fully clear that irrigation demands of the farmer a complete change in outlook. The proposed scheme represents the first step in this farming intensification process. It is based on the development of complementary irrigation to secure food production during the rainy season and development of stock fattening. Gradually with time the farming system will he intensify by introduction of cash crops as cotton, tabac, etc. The example of Asia and India in particular, where the water required for 40 % of the total area irrigated is taken from groundwater resources (the development plan proposed here aims at 50%) clearly demonstrates the economic importance of "micro-irrigation". Preliminary experiments in Africa appear to indicate that the same principles can he applied, with some adaptation, to the Sudanese-Sahelian region.
