Résumé : Originally sugar beet is a long daylight plant which flourishes in temperate maritime climates where the temperature range is fairly narrow. However, as the result of a considerable effort by plant geneticians sugar beet got a wide adaptability. It is a crop relatively resistant to cold, withstand drought, not overly sensitive to salinity. As a winter crop its little need for water and other nutritional elements compared to sugar cane crop make that sugar beet is particularly well adapted to irrigated agriculture in temperature parts of dry regions. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is not a traditional sugar producer country on account of generally unsuitable climatic conditions. Most parts of the Kingdom are too hot and dry for sugar beet and too dry for sugar cane. However, there are limited areas where this does not apply and where irrigation would allow an economical sugar production from beet cultivation. The experimentations and surveys carried out by the agronomical research Centres give scientific evidence and definite proof of the possibilities of successfully growing sugar beet and processing it economically in a number of regions of the Kingdom.
