Résumé : The RS CC 07 trial continues to show that there is a difference in production between coconut palms on bare soil and those on soil covered with ferns. The difference is due to the fact that there is more damage from the pest Sufetula sp. to coconut roots in fern-covered soil. The trial will continue until June 2007. The RS CC 10 trial continues to show that fertilization has a positive effect on young coconut palms. Their performance is good when husk ash fertilizer is applied at a ratio of two units of husk ash to one unit of KCI. This trial also shows that there is very little damage caused by Sufetula pest on coconut palms planted in the middle of a pineapple plantation. Their root system is generally healthy and only a few infrequent attacks have been detected. A new trial RS CC 11, to determine the optimum fertilizer application for young hybrid coconut palms, will be planted in December 2005. The PB 121 hybrid plants are now in the nursery. In accordance with the experimental results, we have seen that in the plantation as a whole, improved soil cleanness leads to: a decrease in pressure from the pest Sufetula (this can be seen on the roots of germinated nuts); and an improvement in the vegetative appearance of the coconut palms, with an increase in the number of green palm fronds and a decrease in the number of empty bunches. However, the level of soil cleanness required is basically that of perfectly bare soil, in other words, no weeds (ferns) in the free interrows and regular burning of organic waste (dry palm fronds and husks) in the windrows. The coconut plantation will be replanted from 2011 onwards (production of hybrid seeds with fields of second generation parents), with exclusively hybrid material (MYD x WAT). The coconuts will be planted as a monoculture at a density of 180 p/ha (8 m in the row x 7 m between the rows), on an area of 20 000 hectares.
