Résumé : To feed its LCA-based eco-verification program, the French government has been funding LCA studies on a wide panel of agricultural produce consumed in France (AGRIBALYSE project) including six tropical and semi-arid produce (small citrus, mango, coffee, cocoa, Thai rice, palm oil) studied by the Agricultural Research for Development Institution (CIRAD, Montpellier, France). Key outcomes and perspectives for the Brazilian mango case study are presented in this paper. Brazil is the leading supplier of fresh mangoes to the EU. In the Rio San Francisco Valley which concentrates more than 90% of Brazilian mango exports, modern and intensive production systems have developed. These systems feature year-round production thanks to well-controlled floral induction and abundant dam water access. In this region, a sample of eight contrasted Kent and Tommy Atkins mango orchards was surveyed in 2012 over the complete crop cycle of mango trees. A cradle-to-market-gate LCA study was produced including most usual impact categories (GWP, Eutrophication, Acidification) as well as toxicity and Water Deprivation potentials. Beyond the extremely time-consuming data collection in farms, the most challenging task consisted in modelling a representative perennial cropping system scenario despite the data gaps in the 25 years dataset. Besides the presentation and discussion of the first LCA for Brazilian mango, this paper discusses the methodological challenges toward a comprehensive assessment of perennial crops from non-temperate regions and their possible integration into an eco-verification program.
