Résumé : Local communities in the Kavango Zambezi (KaZa) transfrontier area, particularly in Binga district in Zimbabwe, depend on baobab products for their livelihoods and as a source of income. This report presents the main results of a feasibility study for improving the sustainable commercialization of baobab fruits in the 14 villages (and 3 wards) of the SWM project. The survey took place in 2021 and was divided in three activities: a village survey in the 14 villages of the project to understand the local management of baobab resource, based on 60 interviews; a market survey conducted in 2 districts towns to understand the current trade and prices of baobab products, and an end-user survey, conducted in Victoria Falls, that explored the current and potential uses of baobab products in the town. Based on these 3 sets of activities, the project gained a better understanding of the baobab management and current market, identified villages where follow up activities could be conducted to improve the baobab value chain, and proposed directions for future investments, in terms of tools, networks, and capacity building. The scale of this survey was limited by the pandemic situation (SARS-Cov-2), which also limited opportunities to do field work, and the number of interviews that could be conducted. A more indepth survey could be conducted, as a follow up, to better understand the yields, needs, capacity to operate tools that could be provided by the project.
