Résumé : The project aimed at developing a new technology for the control of the rhinoceros beetles and palm weevils that damage oil palm and coconut replantings in the whole tropical area. Work focused on identifying the pheromones of these insect pests and plant allelochemicals acting in synergism with pheromones, in order to develop effective mass trapping for their control. The project associated 3 European partners along with two industrialists and 3 DC partners which are specialised research institutes for these crops. The discovery of the pheromone of Scapanes australis and traps adapted to the pest enabled mass trapping for reducing the populations. For Oryctes rhinoceros the catches with its pheromone were considerably increased through detailed evidence of the synergistic effect of rotting plant matter, particularly EFB (empty fruit bunches from the oil mill). This result contribute to improve the mass trapping against this pest. The trapping of Rhynchophorus palmarum is now possible with a completely synthetic mixture that will be soon simplified. The pheromone of Strategus aloeus, has been identified but its use for mass trapping requires further studies. The implementation of mass trapping to control these insects is not finished. Improvements are still possible and even desirable. The results obtained on attractants and traps provide a sound basis for such studies. These new tools need to be assessed in different utilisation strategies and further research are necessary to establish rational procedures for effective use in mass trapping.
