Résumé : The cotton program of CIRAD (Centre International en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement) based in Montpellier (France) has engaged in 1998 a research project on genome mapping and marker assisted selection in cotton. The main objective of this project is to use DNA molecular markers to assist in introgressing fiber quality traits from Gossypium barbadense (Gb) into Gossypium hirsutum (Gh). Three types of molecular markers have been tested for polymorphism between 2 varieties belonging to the Gh and Gb species: RFLP, microsatellites, and AFLP. The markers are presently tested on a BC1 segregating population (105 plants) originating from a cross between Gh and Gb, backcrossed to the Gh parent. A total of near a thousand molecular markers will allow to develop a saturated genetic map by the beginning of the year 2000. The detection and mapping of QTL associated with fiber quality traits will be based on both individual BC1 plants (grown under greenhouse conditions at Montpellier, France) and BC1S1 selfed progenies (grown under field conditions in Brazil) evaluation. An advanced backcross selection program will then be held in order to introgress favorable quality QTL identified in the Gb genome into Gh genome. Apart from the advanced backcross scheme, a population of F2-derived recombinant inbred lines originating from the same Gh x Gb cross are presently created in order to better assess traits related to agricultural productivity such as disease and pest resistance, and plant water use efficiency.
