Résumé : This report aims at presenting the visits performed on different sites of coconut production in Indonesia in order to present the copra oil supply chain to Barry Callebaut. The whole supply chain from the production of coconut fruits, preparation of copra, extraction of the oil until refining have been covered during one week field trip. A demonstration plot of CBFS (Coconut-Based Farming System) has been visited in Sulawesi. Different regions were part of the programme: Flores, Sulawesi, Java East and Java West. The visited villages in Flores and in Sulawesi were clearly dedicated to coconut and copra production for a long time. Even if the farmers intercropped with cocoa, bananas and other crops, the main activity was focused on coconut fruits. The copra drying step was done by two different processes which are described in this report. Copra crushing and oil refining is done in copra mills with traditional and old techniques. The impact of these steps of the supply chain on the environment is obviously significant but has never been quantified. No certification in the coconut supply chain was seen during these visits and the industrials did not report any tentative of doing so, except the one of Cargill in the Philippines. What CIRAD suggests, in collaboration with Barry Callebaut, for the deployment of an action plan for sustainable coconut oil supply, involves several actions. These actions can be done separately or mixed in a coordinated working plan, depending on the context and availability of funds. Some of them can be implemented very quickly; others will need more time for preparation. We need to keep in mind that working on the sustainability of a perennial crop calls for investment over several years.
